Work on the 1969 BMW 2002 involved replacing front body panels, performing additional body repairs, and repainting the car in Chamonix as well as installing an E21-sourced five-speed manual transmission, Koni shocks, and H&R springs. Power comes from a replacement 2.0-liter M10 inline-four, and additional modifications include an aluminum radiator, an upgraded distributor, and widened 13″ steel wheels. Inside, a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel and black cloth Recaro front bucket seats have been installed and are accompanied by a heater and a Becker Europa AM/FM stereo.
Following damage to the front-left fender, the car was disassembled to facilitate the replacement of the nose and damaged fender and further body repairs. The car was then repainted in Chamonix (085) by Willhoit Auto Restoration of Long Beach, California in November 2019. Upon reassembly, the weather seals and trim pieces were replaced and Euro-style bumperettes were installed along with Italian-market front turn signal assemblies. Additional exterior details include a driver-side mirror, pop-out rear windows, and round taillights.
The 13″ steel wheels were widened and powder-coated silver in March 2021, and they were subsequently mounted with 185/70 Pirelli Cinturato tires. Koni shocks and H&R springs have been installed, and braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.
Recaro front bucket seats trimmed in black cloth with vinyl side upholstery were installed along with replacement carpeting and navy door panel inserts prior to the seller’s acquisition. Amenities include a cabin heater, a Becker Europa AM/FM stereo, and crank-operated windows.
The wood-rimmed Nardi three-spoke steering wheel is joined by a cracked wooden shift knob and fronts VDO instrumentation that conists of a tachometer with a 6,400-rpm redline as well as a 120-mph speedometer and gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer is inoperative and shows 13k miles.
A replacement 2.0-liter M10 inline-four sourced from a 1974 2002 was installed prior to the seller’s acquisition. Work since 2020 has included installing an upgraded distributor, an aluminum radiator, an electric cooling fan, a 90-amp alternator, and a starter sourced from an E30 model. The valves were also adjusted and the fuel filter and accessory drive belt were replaced. An oil change was most recently carried out in preparation for the sale. The battery has been relocated to below the rear bench seat and the fuel filler has been moved to inside the trunk.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission sourced from an E21 model. The clutch assembly, throw-out bearing, shifter bushings, and guibo were replaced when the transmission was installed in September 2021.
Spare parts, including a limited-slip differential sourced from an E21 320i, will accompany the car.
